Lesson 04 — Credit Is Capital

What Lenders Actually Look At.

Funding decisions aren't random. They're a pattern you can prepare against.

Story explains the business. Numbers show how the money will move. You need both.

Overview

Funding decisions aren't random. Lenders look at patterns in your numbers, your history, and your documentation. This lesson turns that into a checklist you can prepare against — before you ever fill out an application.

01 / The Factors

What lenders are weighing.

  • Time in business.
  • Revenue and cash-flow patterns — not just total revenue.
  • Existing debt and obligations.
  • Personal credit history and/or business credit history.
  • How clean and complete your financial records are.
02 / Why Clean Records Win

Lenders ask two questions.

Can this business repay? And can we understand their numbers?

Sloppy books look like risk — even when the business is strong. Clean records aren't bureaucracy. They're evidence.

03 / The Documents

Your funding-readiness checklist.

  1. Recent financials — profit & loss, balance sheet if applicable.
  2. Last 3–6 months of business bank statements.
  3. Copies of key contracts or invoices (especially if borrowing against expected revenue).
  4. Tax returns — business and possibly personal.
  5. A simple one-page summary: what you need, why, and how you'll repay.
04 / Prep Moves

Before you apply.

  • Fix obvious errors in your books and credit reports.
  • Pay down or clear small, high-cost balances if you can.
  • Make sure your business name, address, and EIN are identical on every document. Mismatches kill applications.

Decision Guide

Walk through it.

Can you produce 3–6 months of clean bank statements today?
If no — fix that first.
Are your books current within 30 days?
If no — reconcile before applying.
Do you have a one-page funding story ready?
If no — write it tonight.
All three yes?
You're application-ready.
