Lesson 05 — Credit Is Capital

Alternative Capital Paths.

A 'no' from one lender isn't the end of the road. It's a redirect.

There is more than one front door to capital. Build your map.

Overview

A 'no' from one lender isn't the end. This lesson maps the alternatives — CDFIs, community lenders, local programs, vendor terms — and shows how to build a capital map so you always know your next move.

01 / The Alternatives

Capital paths beyond the bank.

CDFIs (Community Development Financial Institutions) — mission-driven lenders focused on underserved communities and small businesses.

Community lenders / loan funds — local organizations offering smaller or more flexible loans.

Local and state programs — grants, matching funds, and credit-support programs.

Vendor / trade credit — net-30 or net-60 terms with suppliers that function like short-term financing.

02 / Why It Matters

These paths exist for a reason.

  • Traditional options often have stricter criteria or less flexibility.
  • Mission-driven lenders are designed to support businesses mainstream systems overlook.
  • Some programs combine capital with coaching, technical assistance, or credit education — capital plus capacity.
03 / Ask Every Lender

Five questions, every time.

  1. What is the APR, and what fees apply?
  2. Is there a personal guarantee?
  3. What happens if I miss a payment?
  4. Are there prepayment penalties?
  5. Do you offer coaching or support alongside the capital?
04 / Protect Yourself

Spot a predatory offer before it spots you.

  • Watch for extremely high effective costs, pressure tactics, and unclear terms.
  • If you feel rushed or confused, slow down.
  • Get a second opinion. A good lender will wait. A predatory one won't.

Decision Guide

Walk through it.

Got a 'no' from a traditional bank?
Pivot to a CDFI or community loan fund.
Need flexibility on terms?
Ask about vendor / trade credit with key suppliers.
Looking for capital + capacity?
Look at local and state programs with built-in coaching.
Pressured to sign fast?
That's the warning sign. Walk away.
